Portland is becoming the hot new city for young professionals, families with children, and retirees alike. Its unique blend of eclectic architecture, big-city convenience, and breathtaking natural landscapes is proving to be a major draw to a large variety of people. If you're considering investing in some Portland Maine real estate, it can be helpful to know a little about the areas of the city before deciding where to buy.

If you're looking for a safe investment with a decent appreciation rate, then the Deering and Outer Forest neighborhoods are definitely for you. All lovely suburban neighborhoods with solidly built housing, the only possible disadvantage of the area is a tendency for city access roads to bottleneck. Though the homes here are selling for quite competitive rates, they are mostly retaining their resale value very well, and would be an excellent place to look for a family home. Though Deering proper has perhaps the best valued houses and accessibility, houses in East, North, and West Deering are certainly not to be sneezed at. Outer Forest has much the same feel as Deering, though with more apartments and condos than Deering, which is primarily composed of single-family homes.


If living in town is more your style, then the West End is probably your best bet. A well-established residential area, West End is known for its stately colonial architecture, especially the old brick houses, which have an extremely high resale value. The neighborhood is updating somewhat as more condos and conversion projects pop up in response to all the new residents, but it still remains a classy, safe area in which to live. West End is extremely accessible, and it is easy to get to almost any part of the city within minutes. One of the best things about West End is its neighborhood association, which is extremely helpful in providing information for new residents, as well as neighborhood-wide activities on a regular basis.

And for the trendy, up and coming neighborhood set, look no farther than the East and the Old Port District. Though the East End is currently a mixed bag of luxury housing with some not-so-nice areas, it is undergoing a renovation, and would be an excellent place to invest in before it becomes expensive. The Old Port District is absolutely filled with entertainment, nightlife, and shopping, and is perhaps the most urban district in Portland. Either one of these districts would be excellent for college students or young professionals.


The Portland Maine real estate market really does have something for everyone, whether you are simply interested in an investment property, or are looking for a place to build your life. The city is projected to continue its huge economic and social growth throughout the next decade, and would be an excellent place for anyone to call home.
