Malibu Real Estate is steeped in history

Many owners of Malibu real estate are not educated in the history of their region and the influences responsible for the establishment and development of the Malibu community. Southern California is unique among the West in that many settlements were established far earlier than the frontier towns set up by settlers who were moving from the east. The Spanish influence on Southern California and Malibu spans as far back as the 16th century, with the first documented claim to Malibu being made in the early 19th century by the Spaniard Jose Bartoleme Tapia. Malibu real estate sits on land that was prized as a fertile haven for fresh water and wildlife. An eventual transition to wealthy New England rule blazed the way for inhabitance by the affluent and sophisticated.

Although the New Englander Frederick Hastings Rindge and his wife were able to stave off development by the Southern Pacific Railroad to run a track through their Malibu ranch, California eventually succeeded in building Pacific Coast Highway 1 through the region. Once the highway was determined to be a foregone conclusion, the widow of Mr. Rindge began leasing and selling Malibu real estate to other affluent individuals and those in the booming movie industry. Henceforth, the area in Malibu where the Rindge ranch was established and eventually sold off by Mr. Rindge’s widow became known as the "Malibu Movie Colony".

The Spanish influence of settlers and explorers who passed through Malibu in the earliest stages of the region's colonization is still evident through trends in design and architecture of both residential and commercial buildings. Perhaps a result of its heritage, Spanish-style design seems a natural fit for Malibu real estate and tends to compliment the landscapes surrounding neighborhoods and retail space. The views enjoyed by residents of Malibu on the beach and overlooks come with a complimentary breeze enabling outdoor living for many seasons of the year. Spanish architecture is commonly erected with an eye towards outdoor living so the functionality of such a structure meshes easily with the Malibu climate.

Through different architectural movements and booms in the financial status of Malibu real estate owners, this region has become synonymous with wealth and panoramic beauty. Construction of residences in the modern design and Malibu real estate renovations have done little to detract from the roots of the region and it's obvious ties to both Spanish and the English settlers. The history of the region as it is tied to the movie industry is fresh in the minds of many currently inhabiting Malibu real estate, as movies and television shows are still regularly shot in the area.
